This blog was first created to be an online platform for me to share my Chess games - the wins, the losses, the lessons and the highlights. While the content has diversified, I still keep going back to Chess, since I learned to play when I was about six years old (over four decades ago). Since I launched this blog, I have joined (and left) my local Chess club, Kidsgrove in North Staffordshire. I played some fascinating games while I was there, and they're included too (with a particular shout-out to my favourite game, call it my masterclass).
My aim in all my analysis and coverage of my games is to have plenty of diagrams. I have always been annoyed at the lack of pictures and diagrams in Chess books (I have since learned that it's ok to play along on a board instead of trying to do everything in my head), but I've looked at Chess books differently in the last few years.
The series of Chess games kicks off with some games I played on Google Chess (back when Google had an RSS homepage)...
A couple of Ruy Lopez games, against Chess player Belraim Penhaligon and a game against Mi Kl. The Ruy Lopez is a typical e4 e5 game, played between players who are trying to win quickly. I have observed (and commented) that whenever you join an online Chess community, opponents will always try to play the Patzer's opening against you. This led me to write a series of articles on how to defend the Patzer's Opening, including 'don't panic'.
My first over-the-board game was a friendly I played on my first occasion at Kidsgrove Chess Club. I played my usual d4 (as it was during the early 2010s) and faced The Bird Opening. I went on to play 'my favourite Chess game' which was a Queen's Gambit (which I played most often). I have suffered some dreadful defeats playing the Queen's Gambit Semi Slav, and I've included one of those here too.
I've found my earliest ever online Chess game, and that rounds out my set - for now.
